Most working lives are structured around a series of habits - check the cash flow, deal with complaints, have a quick yell & a coffee, etc. etc. And when your brain goes zwerp (that's a technical term for the blankness when you can't decide what to do next), we all have our little habit. Mine is mild panic and messing with my website. But what if you used your zwerp time to truly drive your enterprise forward?
Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints is a marvelous framework for honing in on exactly what needs to change to improve your business, and even more important, how to stop organisational habits from making things worse. Don't just dive for the squeaky wheel, make it a habit to truly look and listen, sometimes it's the tiniest twitches that rouse the hulking beast of success.
