Years ago I read or heard somewhere that one should always be a little bit in love with the people you serve, and I must say that I've always found that my performance improves when I am just that little bit in love with my customers. That's why I have chosen to serve small businesses - sure there is a lot more money available when working with the big guys, but hired guns, especially in middle management just don't have the clarity and commitment that small business owners have. Small business is where the "rubber really meets the road" and leadership is committed to really solving problems, not just pinning them on some-one else. And courageous - I love the bravery of people who strike out on their own. Yup I can truly say that I am just the teensiest bit in love with those I serve... lucky me.
